The BMS method is a family-oriented approach designed to stimulate the motor development of young children with Down syndrome. With the guidance of a pediatric physiotherapist serving as a coach, parents learn to enhance their child’s motor skills at home in a playful and engaging way. The child’s enjoyment of movement and the expertise of parents are key elements of the BMS method.
Dr. Peter Lauteslager, a Dutch pediatric physiotherapist, has conducted extensive research into the specific motor challenges faced by young children with Down syndrome. Based on his findings, he developed the test Basic Motor Skills of Children with Down Syndrome (BMS). In addition, he created a treatment method called Physiotherapy for Young Children with Down Syndrome. This treatment is directly informed by the results of the BMS test. Scientific studies have demonstrated highly positive outcomes for both the test and the treatment method.
In 2000, Dr. Lauteslager earned his PhD from Utrecht University for his scientific research on the effectiveness of the BMS method. The unique combination of assessment and treatment has proven to be both highly effective and practically applicable, not only for pediatric physiotherapists but also for parents who wish to support their child’s motor development.
Lynn
When Lynn is tested, Peter makes it feel like he is playing with her. She thoroughly enjoys it. The BMS test provides a detailed account of Lynn’s abilities. It reveals she can do more than we expected. Lynn just needs a little more time and attention than most children. This is evident when Peter and Lynn play and practice together. We are also learning to consistently provide a calm and supportive environment when playing with or caring for her.
